HEC-TV and Ladue Schools Partner Up
Creating Learning Opportunities and Breaking Records
A little more than a year ago, the Ladue Horton Watkins High School (LHWHS) Broadcast Technology department entered into a joint venture with HEC-TV . An Emmy award winning station of excellence, HEC-TV is St . Louis’ leading producer of education, arts, and cultural television . This partnership has created outstanding opportunities for broadcast technology students, as well as other Ladue Schools students, to get hands-on learning experiences in creating both prerecorded and live broadcasts .
iAm Ladue
Each month, two of the LHWHS Broadcast Technology department’s televisions shows, the student-produced Ladue View and the district communications program Ladue Schools Today, are combined to create a one-hour television show called iAm Ladue . The curiosity factor for iAm Ladue kicked in almost immediately after the first show was aired and linked to HEC-TV’s website . It is the only non-professional programming on HEC-TV’s schedule, the only show created at the high school level, and is currently the number one collection on HEC-TV .
Explore! and The Science Behind
These two educational programs created by HEC-TV delve into specific topics of interest to students at different grade levels . Students at schools across North America participate through video conferencing . Recently, many of these programs have been broadcast live from the high school’s Charles W . Marshall Video Technology Center and Studio, giving high school students an opportunity to participate in the production elements of the show . In addition, younger students — such as the fourth-graders from Reed Elementary School pictured below — learn about broadcast production by watching from behind the scenes and by asking questions of those being interviewed .
Last April, HEC-TV and LHWHS partnered with KTVI Fox 2 to present a program about the science behind weather forecasting . During the live show, students had the opportunity to interact with Fox 2 Meteorologist Chris Higgins and Storm Chaser/ Photographer George Wise and take a tour of the
Fox 2 weather studio to find out what goes into creating a forecast. Samantha Weil, then a senior at LHWHS, participated in the project and said, “Not only is this experience a chance to learn by doing, but we also have the opportunity to work with professionals and learn from their examples .”
In October, two episodes of Explore! were filmed at the high school . In Life of an Explorer, students learned why people are driven to explore by meeting a mountain climber and going back in time to the world of Daniel Boone with a local historian . From the Farm to Home show, students gained a better understanding of the food they eat, by hearing from a health coach, an orchard farmer, and an urban chicken farmer .
“Media literacy is an extremely important skill for me to teach my broadcasting students . And real-world project-based opportunities to learn, such as this collaborative show, offer my students tangible media production lessons and a genuine learning experience,” said Don Goble, LHWHS’ Broadcast Technology, Film & Multimedia Instructor .
