DURING CLASS
  • Edit WALLDO projects
  • Follow this required sequence (this is the exact sequence as your sample video and follows the WALLDO acronym. You only need to use ONE of each WALLDO shot you recorded. For example, you recorded 2 Wide shots, so you nay have to select 1 to add to your project. You recorded to Angled shots. Therefore, you only need to select 1 of those Angled shots to include in your project....and so on.
  • Use only the BEST 3-5 seconds of each shot
  • Order of shots are:
  1. Wide
  2. Angled
  3. Low
  4. Linking
  5. Depth
  6. Opposite***
  7. Last shot after Opposite should be your interview shot WITH audio saying their name and spelling it.
  8. (include the entire clip of the person saying their name, even if it exceeds 5 seconds.
Special editing instructions
  • Detach and delete the natural sound audio from your WALLDO shots
  • Add music by selecting the music and sound in the toolbar in FCPX. Once there, select "iLife Sound Effects" - Jingles - (and then select one of those songs.)  Click and drag it under your shots in the timeline and adjust the volume accordingly as I taught you.
  • When you have completed the entire video, go to the "Show Share Destinations" button above the tool bar on the far right (arrow coming out of the square) - select Apple Devices 1080p - change the title to (your name) WALLDO - select next - save to the Desktop - and share with Goble through Google Drive,

  • Student’s will be videotaping and editing their projects.
  • Students may sign out on the board where they are going if they leave class to videotape.
  • Both partners need to record their OWN footage and their OWN sequence of shots. Remember, you need TWO different action shots for EACH WALLDO shot.
  • Partners may not use the same footage for their projects
  • Both partners need to finish recording all of their footage by the end of class today.
  • Once you are finished record, follow the steps to IMPORT your footage from your SD card into Final Cut Pro X.
  • Begin editing and follow this required sequence (this is the exact sequence as your sample video and follows the WALLDO acronym. You only need to use ONE of each WALLDO shot you recorded. 1. Finished shooting our practice Wide, Medium and Tight action shots, along with interview composition.
2. Goble observations roaming around the practice. Students were incorrectly:
  • following the proper mic technique
  • following the rule with the main light source behind the camera
  • following directions with the interview composition by only asking what was assigned
  • leaving headroom on shots
  • setting up the tripod

There are A LOT of tiny details to follow. But you MUST try to follow them all, create a checklist, follow DIRECTIONS and ask questions if you want to be successful!

3. Once all footage was recorded, Goble introduced Final Cut Pro X with a demo of the software and students began hands-on training.
4. Refer to the Final Cut Pro X Google Doc for reviews of these instructions.

  • Discussed video equipment operation
  • Showed where equipment is stored
  • Showed the check out process
  • Practice using the camera, tripod and microphone
  • Camera goes over the shoulder for all interviews
  • If the interview sits, you sit. If they stand, you stand = eye level
  • Microphone is held by the REPORTER and held 2-3 inches from the chin of the interviewee.
  • Don't tap the microphone base because it will record that tapping noise.
  • Frame the interview to omit the zombie arm or zombie hand
  • It's ok to see the microphone though in the shot - NO AUDIO, NO VIDEO!
  • Practiced shooting action at WIDE, MEDIUM and TIGHT
  • Practiced composing an interview shot with our partner and recorded them saying their name and spelling it.

  • Finished watching Mobile Journalism videos
  • Discussed students taking initiative of their own learning. If there were SPECIFIC areas of the iTunes U course they would like to see revised, to include those thoughts on their Google Doc reflections.
  • Watched Volume 1 of Video Coach
  • Learning field camera operation and Final Cut Pro X next class
MOST IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER!
  • Shoot in SEQUENCES
  • A sequence uses AT LEAST Wide-Medium-Tight shots. Not 1 shot of BRoll, not 2 shots of BRoll, AT LEAST 3!
  • Main light source goes behind the camera
  • Use manual focus, white balance and iris
  • Shoot using the Rule of Thirds
  • Alternate interview rule of thirds for visual variety
  • NO shot that we see in the final edit should be less than 3 seconds or longer than 7 seconds
  • Always shoot more BRoll than you need
  • Record HANDLES - seconds on the front end and back end of what you actually want to capture in your footage. Allows for easy place to cut and edit.
